Derks, of Appleton, Wisc., took almost six minutes off of the previous women’s full marathon course record. “I was training for this run for a 2:45 but three weeks ago, I decided to just go for it,” said Derks. “Going into the race I knew there would be a couple of hard stretches, but I took advantage of the tail wind when I could. Head down and grind it out.”
Kyle, now a Carmel resident after starting his running career in his hometown of Fishers, Ind., came out on top with a new course record in the men’s half marathon. “It was an awesome day,” said Kyle. “I really appreciate everything that goes into these events, especially during these tough times.”
Bareikis, from Crestwood, Ill., echoed his comments. “With no races going on, it’s amazing they put together this race today,” said Bareikis, winner and new course record holder for the women’s half marathon. “The second part of the course was tough, but I worked hard at it. A little bit of wind but otherwise perfect conditions.”
After staging a virtual-only race in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Carmel Marathon Weekend moved to an in-person event in 2021, with registration number restrictions and COVID-19 policies in place in accordance with local guidelines. A virtual race option was also available to participants.
“We are so incredibly pleased with today’s event, really starting with the new outdoor location for the Fitness Expo yesterday,” said Todd Oliver, race director for the Carmel Marathon Weekend. “Of course there were added challenges this year, but thanks to everyone’s cooperation we were able to host a safe and successful live race. It was just icing on the cake to have nice weather, resulting in some fast times on the course. We have to thank all of our participants, volunteers and partners for their part in making this event one to remember!”
The 12th Annual Carmel Marathon Weekend will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2022. Registration details will be available at CarmelMarathon.com.
